Speed Camera Detector Buyer's Guide

GPS speed camera detectors

GPS speed camera detectors contain a database of speed camera locations co-ordinates, these databases can also include accident blackspot locations, schools, congestion charging zones and user defined locations. GPS speed camera detectors can also include such information as road speed limits, road number, distance to camera in metres/seconds. Most systems such as the Talex Elite, Snooper Sapphire, Pogo Alert , RoadPilot MicroGo also include voice warnings informing the driver of speed camera type and road speed limit.

How does a GPS speed camera detector work?

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a navigation system consisting of a network of 24 orbiting satellites. A GPS speed camera detector will then lock onto three or more GPS satellites to indicate the exact location of your vehicle. Using a database of GPS co-ordinates of speed cameras and in many case speed limits which is updateable. The GPS speed camera detector will then warn the driver from a pre-set range to the presence of speed cameras and other defined points such as schools in the road ahead.

GPS speed camera detector features

Auto Ranging
- feature allows the user to set the GPS speed camera detector to automatically alert you at a range based on the speed limit of the road you are travelling on. For example driving in a 60mph zone the GPS speed camera detector would alert you from 400metres whereas when driving in a 30mph zone you would receive a warning from 200metres.

Smart Warning - feature allows you to set your GPS speed camera detector to provide a short/early warning when you are travelling below the road speed limit. If you exceed the road speed limit the GPS speed camera detector will then provide a full audio and visual warning.

Speed Limit Alert - feature allows the user to set the GPS speed camera detector to alert you when you reach any speed you choose. For instance you could set your GPS speed camera detector to alert you when your speed reaches 30mph so that you never accidentally stray over the speed limit.

Are GPS speed camera detectors legal?

YES they are, and will remain, totally legal. They compliment the Government's policy to ensure that camera sites are visible and conspicuous to drivers, and so help deter excessive and inappropriate speeds on the roads.
