Speed Camera Detector Buyer's Guide

Satellite Navigation with speed cameras locations

Pogo DriveSatellite navigation systems offer the same level of information regarding speed locations as GPS speed camera detectors. Generally though the screen layout on most models isn't as detailed as a dedicated speed camera detector. Although the Pogo Drive satellite navigation system provides a dedicated speed camera alert only mode, and the Snooper Syrius S600 Plus includes pop-up speed camera alerts on screen, displaying cameras type, speed limit and distance to camera location. This is also combined with spoken voice alerts, on these models.

TomTom GO 530Satellite navigation also combines mapping with other features such as live traffic information, MP3 players, etc. All satellite navigation systems use one of two different map providers. These are NAVTEQ and TELE ATLAS, most manufactures utilise NAVTEQ maps these manufactures include: Becker, Garmin, Magellan, Pogo and Snooper. While Navman and TomTom utilise TELE ATLAS mapping.

To provide speed cameras locations via an in-car satellite navigation system many manufactures use a third party database of speed camera location to power their speed camera database. Many in fact use speed camera detector company databases for example all Garmin sat nav Becker Traffic Assist 7928products are powered using Cyclops speed camera database, whilst Navman utilise the RoadPilot speed camera database. Pogo GPS manage and use their own GPS speed camera database named Origin 360 within the Pogo Drive. Similarly Snooper manage and use their own speed camera database named Enigma and is the only speed camera database to be updated on a daily basis.

How does a GPS satellite navigation system work?

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a navigation system consisting of a network of 24 orbiting satellites. A sat nav system will then lock onto three or more GPS satellites to indicate the exact location of your vehicle. Using a database of GPS co-ordinates of speed cameras and in many case speed limits which is updateable. The satellite navigation system will then warn the driver from a pre-set range to the presence of speed cameras in the road ahead.

GPS satellite navigation features

Handsfree Calling
- feature allows the user to connect a compatible Bluetooth enabled phone to their satellite navigation system for safe hands free calling. Most satellite navigation display the callers ID on screen.

Live Traffic Updates  - becoming a must have feature, live traffic information is collected and then displayed on screen to advise the driver of congestion in the road ahead, with suggested re-routing options. Live traffic updates can be obtained in two ways. The first which is more expensive is via a Bluetooth enabled phone to gather the latest traffic information from a service provider and display on the screen of the sat nav device. The second which is more common is via a plug-in RDS-TMC (Radio Data System - Traffic Message Channel) receiver, this system uses a FM antenna to gather real-time information and display live traffic updates on the screen of the satellite navigation system. With the second option of using an RDS-TMC receiver there are no on going subscription costs. Top of the range sat nav systems such as the Navman S90i, TomTom GO 720T and Garmin nuvi 710 now encompass a built-in traffic receiver as standard.

MP3 Player
- feature allows the user to play and listen to MP3 music and video files.

Speed Camera Locations - To provide speed cameras locations via an in-car satellite navigation system many manufactures use a third party database of speed camera location to power their speed camera database. Many in fact use speed camera detector company databases for example all Garmin sat nav products are powered using Cyclops speed camera database, whilst Navman utilise the RoadPilot speed camera database. Pogo GPS manage and use their own GPS speed camera database named Origin 360 within the Pogo Drive. Similarly Snooper manage and use their own speed camera database named Enigma and is the only speed camera database to be updated on a daily basis.

Are satellite navigation with speed camera locations legal?

YES they are, and will remain, totally legal  - The Government have a positive attitude towards GPS systems. They compliment the Government's policy to ensure that camera sites are visible and conspicuous to drivers, and so help deter excessive and inappropriate speeds on the roads.
