Speed camera detectors from manufacturers such as Origin technologies, RoadPilot and Snooper use satellite technology. These GPS speed camera detectors compare the location of your vehicle in relation to each speed camera site.

These GPS systems then sound a tone or provide voice alerts when there is a speed camera in the road ahead. Furthermore the GPS technology enhances the feature of the speed camera detector. For example, the speed limit of the road and an accurate speedometer are viewable on screen. Speed-sensitive warnings can also be set to alert only when driving above the speed limit. Garmin, Navman and TomTom satellite navigation systems also provide advanced warning to speed cameras. The full range of TomTom and Garmin satellite navigation systems include speed camera locations. The Navman iCN 530 and iCN 720 are also installed with speed camera locations.
 

Warning range
The warning range of the speed camera detectors ranges from 500 metres (Snooper S2 neo) to 2,000 metres (Origin b2). The warning range is user-definable. For example, the Origin b2 can be set to warn up to 2,000 metres in advance. The Origin b2 is the only speed camera detector that provides a countdown in seconds and metres.

Speed sensitive warnings
The satellite technology in the more expensive speed camera detectors calculates your speed relative to the speed limit of the road. When selected, this feature only provides warning when above the speed limit. An alert will not sound in a traffic jam and when at or below the speed limit. Detectors with this feature include the Origin b2, RoadPilot MicroGo, and the Snooper Sapphire.

Voice alerts
The Snooper S2 neo sounds a beep. The Origin b2, RoadPilot MicroGo and Snooper Sapphire can be set to sound voice alerts (“Gatso,” “Truvelo,” “SPECS,” for example). The volume of the alert can also be set by the user.

Speed cameras
Utilising the GPS database of speed camera information the type of speed camera in the road ahead is indicated with, for example, the Snooper Sapphire and Origin b2. The Origin b2 and Snooper S6-R neo also display the road name/number. Warnings include “Gatso,” “Truvelo,” and “SPECS.”
