Cyclops began life as a standalone GPS speed camera detector - a dedicated windscreen-mounted device that warned drivers of fixed and mobile camera locations. That hardware is long discontinued. Today, Cyclops is a speed camera database, and it is the database that powers safety camera alerts on every Garmin sat nav sold in the UK and across much of Europe and the world.
If you own a Garmin sat nav and receive alerts to speed cameras, those alerts are driven by the Cyclops database. Understanding what Cyclops covers, how it is maintained, and what your options are for keeping it up to date is straightforward - and this guide covers all of it.
What the Cyclops database covers
The Cyclops database contains verified locations for the following camera and road safety alert types:
The Cyclops database does not cover mobile speed guns. These devices emit a brief laser or radar signal only at the moment of measurement - there is no advance warning possible via a location database. For a full explanation of what GPS databases can and cannot detect, see the GPS speed camera detector guide.
In terms of geography, Cyclops covers the UK and Ireland, much of Western and Eastern Europe, and a number of other countries internationally. Regional subscriptions are available separately - see the subscription section below.
How the database works
Cyclops maintains a dedicated team of field surveyors who physically verify camera locations before they are added to the database. That team covers over 250,000 miles of UK and European roads each year. Each entry uses what Cyclops calls waypoint technology - a verified location point designed to trigger accurate, directional alerts without generating false alarms from cameras on the opposite carriageway or side roads.
When your Garmin sat nav approaches a location recorded in the Cyclops database, it generates an audible alert and an on-screen display showing the camera type, the road speed limit, and your current speed. Alerts are directional - a camera on the opposite side of the road does not trigger a warning for your direction of travel.
Every Garmin sat nav is supplied with the Cyclops database pre-loaded. You will receive speed camera alerts from the first time you use the device, without needing to do anything. The pre-loaded data reflects the database as it stood at the time the device was manufactured. Over time, as new cameras are installed and existing ones are relocated or removed, the pre-loaded data will become less current - which is where subscriptions come in.
Keeping your Cyclops database up to date
With an active Cyclops subscription, your Garmin sat nav can receive database updates daily. Updates are delivered via Garmin Express, the desktop software used to manage Garmin devices on a PC or Mac. Connect your sat nav, open Garmin Express, and any available Cyclops updates are downloaded and transferred to the device.
The frequency with which you update is up to you. Fixed camera locations change relatively slowly - most sites that exist today will still be there in six months. However, temporary roadworks cameras can appear and disappear quickly, and average speed camera zones on major roads are expanded and modified over time. For the most current coverage, updating every week or two is a sensible habit during an active subscription period.
If your subscription lapses, your Garmin will continue to deliver speed camera alerts using whatever data was last downloaded to the device. The alerts will not disappear - they will simply stop being refreshed with new or changed locations.
Cyclops subscription costs
Cyclops subscriptions for Garmin sat navs are managed through Garmin. Current pricing for a one-year subscription is approximately:
- UK and Ireland: around £20 per year
- Full European coverage: around £30 per year
Garmin typically offers a free trial period when a new device is first activated, allowing you to receive daily Cyclops updates without charge before deciding whether to subscribe. Pricing and trial terms should be confirmed directly with Garmin as they can change.
For drivers who regularly travel to Europe, the European subscription ensures camera coverage across the countries you visit - though as always, check the legal position on using speed camera warning devices in each country before travelling. France in particular prohibits GPS-based camera warning devices entirely. See the speed camera detector legality guide for country-by-country information.
